3 Tips for Managing Your Social Media Strategy

by Samantha Meldrum

Thanks to social media, marketing your small business these days is easy and inexpensive. Social media allows you to tell people about you and your business. You can share your story and engage with customers all for FREE!

But, social media is also time-consuming and overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you manage your social media marketing efforts.

Don’t be a Jack of all platforms and a master of none.

Many business owners fall into the trap of feeling like the have to be on EVERY social media platform ever created. I am guilty of this!

There are tons of articles out there telling you this or that social media platform is important. Next thing you know, you’re on all of them.

When I first started my business, I tried to be on too many social media platforms at the same time. Pretty soon I was overwelmed and spending too much time on social media. There was content to create and customers to engage for each platform.

Don’t be a Jack of all social media. You’ll end up being a master of none. Stop going crazy trying to be on every IT platform of the month. There are just too many of them!

Choose a social media strategy for your business and stick to it. Select 2-3 social media that makes sense for your products and services. Then, build your brand on those platforms.

You must give before your receive.

Why is social media so great anyway?

If your answer is “because it’s another advertising channel for my business,” you’re wrong!

It’s because you can engage and build relationships with your customers.

People are on social media to interact with others not be bombarded with your ads. So, get to know your customers and offer them value.

Once you’ve provided value to them, they will reciprocate in kind. It’s also much easier to ask for something, like buying your products, if you’ve built up goodwill.

A year and a half ago, I started Handmade Curator on Instagram. Handmade Curator is a global community of over 75,000 creatives and makers.

During the past 1.5 years, I’ve promoted hundreds of small businesses for free on Instagram. Because I’ve built up goodwill with my community, they are happy to return the favor.

For example, on Friday’s I help creatives connect with one another and grow their Instagram account (Follow Friday). Often, community members reciprocate by encouraging others to check out my account.

Be consistent!

In a crowed market, it’s easy to be forgotten. That’s why, the key to success on social media is consistency (I can hear the groans now).

You have to consistently put good content out there and consistently engage with your community.

There’s a lot of competition for your customer’s attention. If your customers aren’t talking to you or getting value from you, they will forget all about you. As the saying goes, out of sight, out of mind!

On Handmade Curator, for example, I consistently post on Instagram 1-2 times a day. That is how I was able to grow my account to over 75,000 followers.

I know, this sounds time consuming. It is the reason why I recommended earlier that you concentrate on a couple of platforms. Another option is to focus on one social media platform at a time.

I first built Handmade Curator on Instagram. As the communty grew, there was a need for a space where members could focus on business issues. So, We Are Small Biz, a Facebook community where my followers can discuss all things business, was founded.
